ISWAN in India & South Asia is pleased to announce a one-day seminar in Mumbai on November 28th, 2024, focused on championing the wellbeing of seafarers. The theme of this event is “Seafarers: Supported, Empowered, Connected.” This event aims to bring together key players in the maritime industry to discuss and develop solutions for seafarers’ welfare.

The seminar will provide a platform for discussing critical issues affecting seafarers and sharing best practices in maritime welfare. The Indian Navy will share the crucial work being done in Indian Ocean and Red Sea in protecting and safeguarding seafarers and shipping industry from piracy incidents or other emerging threats.
Presentations and panel discussions will revolve around three main themes:

  • Seafarers: Supported – Addressing the ongoing issues faced by seafarers, such as being duped by fraudulent crewing agents, abandonment and the challenges being faced by them as well as their families.
  • Seafarers: Empowered – Exploring the impact of technological advancements and greener shipping practices on the maritime workforce. Emphasis will be placed on upskilling and lifelong learning to help seafarers adapt to industry changes.
  • Seafarers: Connected – Highlighting the importance of family support and effective communication in enhancing seafarers’ welfare. The role of families as welfare allies will be discussed, along with strategies for better awareness and self-care.

Key Highlights

  • Launch of Family Outreach Programme: ISWAN’s new program aims to provide awareness sessions for seafarers’ family members, focusing on the unique challenges of the seafaring career, effective communication strategies, self-care techniques, financial discipline, and the company’s role.
  • GMU-ISWAN Survey on Fraudulent Crewing Issues in India: Results and discussions on the GMU-ISWAN joint survey to investigate the challenges that Indian seafarers face when looking for employment opportunities at sea.
  • Impact of Decarbonization on Seafarers’ Welfare: We are unveiling the conclusive findings of ISWAN’s latest survey and exploring how the industry’s transition towards a sustainable future affects seafarers’ well-being.

Our Focus:

  • Expert Panels and Presentations: Featuring industry experts from the Directorate General of Shipping, shipping companies, training institutions, maritime unions, and welfare organisations. Each panel will include at least one seafarer to ensure their voices are heard. We expect Seafarers, cadets, and their families to also attend the event along with industry stakeholders.
  • Networking Opportunities: The seminar is free and offers valuable opportunities for networking with industry professionals and stakeholders.
  • Proactive Approach: Focus on proactive, solutions-oriented discussions to address the challenges faced by seafarers and enhance their wellbeing.
