A look back at ISWAN’s work and impact in 2023-24

We are pleased to share our annual review of ISWAN’s activities over the financial year 2023-24.

We are pleased to share our annual review of ISWAN’s activities over the financial year 2023-24.

This report covers from 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024, a period when we saw continued demand for ISWAN’s services.

Over the course of the year, we assisted 6,932 seafarers and their families of 103 nationalities through our helplines – including SeafarerHelp and YachtCrewHelp, which provide emotional, wellbeing and practical support around the clock – and our international teams, who provide humanitarian support on the ground in India and the Philippines.

Contract issues were one of the top reasons seafarers contacted our helplines in 2023-24, but we also saw increases in cases regarding abandonment and abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence on SeafarerHelp, and cases involving crew seeking employment on YachtCrewHelp.

Seafarers and their families received grants administered by ISWAN totalling US $192,137, and we delivered 121 Maritime Mental Health Awareness training sessions to crew and staff ashore around the world.

We also saw our membership network grow to over 100 member companies and organisations, and the demand for commissioned helplines operated by ISWAN continued to increase as companies recognise their value.

We have been working on a range of exciting projects and programmes throughout this financial year. Our international team designed the Family Outreach Programme to highlight the importance of family support for seafarers’ wellbeing, and we launched our ‘Safe at sea…it takes all of us!’ campaign around allyship and the role that men seafarers can play in making life at sea safer for all.
