Why I stayed in seafaring

On October 10th, ISWAN - Philippines hosted an event titled “Financial Freedom, Mental Clarity: Empowering Seafarers and Families” in celebration of World Mental Health Day to address the crucial intersection of financial stability and mental wellbeing among seafarers and their families.
Quezon City, Philippines – ISWAN – Philippines successfully hosted a meaningful event to commemorate World Mental Health Day, focusing on the connection of financial freedom and mental wellbeing for seafarers and their families.
The event, titled “Financial Freedom, Mental Clarity: Empowering Seafarers and Families,” was held at ALU.APSU.ITF Bldg, Cubao, Quezon City, brought together financial experts to provide insights, practical tools, and knowledge to enhance the participants’ financial literacy.
The event opened with welcome remarks from the event’s Principal Sponsor, Sun Life, represented by Mr. Justin Ubana. This was followed by a fun and engaging game that tested the participants’ willingness to take a risk in different financial situations that they may encounter.
The day was filled with series of discussions from Ms. Lorraine P. Carlot, Senior Manager and Consumer Protection Department head of Bank of Commerce; Mr. Eduardo Farol, a real estate professional, and Mr. Peter Dela Cruz, former seafarer and trainer from F1ST Services; and Mr. Justin Ubana a former seafarer and a financial advisor from Sun Life.

Ms. Carlota discussed financial awareness, how not fall prey to online scammers, and the various bank services that are beneficial to the seafaring families.
“It is recommended or suggested that depositor in general (seafarer or not) should know what are the features, limitations of the bank products they availed, to avoid problem i the future, for example couple opened an and account meaning two should sign, one is trying to withdraw from the account without the knowleged of the spouse, that is a problem.” – Jenifer H. Mr. Farol and Mr. Dela Cruz shared the dos and don’ts when purchasing a real estate property. According to Mr. Dela Cruz,
“Real estate investment can provide a steady stream of rental income and diversify an investment portfolio, reducing the overall risk of capital loss.”

Finally, Mr. Ubana provided information on different insurances available in the market, especially those that are a tailored to the unique lifestyle of seafarers and their families. He emphasized the importance of insurance, stating,
“Seafarers need insurance to protect against the high risks of accidents, illness, and loss of income at sea, ensuring financial security. In today’s generation, who doesn’t want to have peace of mind?”
The program also included a panel discussion moderated by Marville Cullen Espago, ISWAN – Philippines’ Country Manager. This discussion provided attendees with diverse perspectives on financial awareness.
The event was also attended by Atty. Generick Humprey V. Morales, National Vice President for Operations of APSU – ALU.
Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the event. Redge Capilos, a Deck Cadet from Dohle Seafront, shared his thoughts, saying,
I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to attend the event. I’m thankful for Dohle Seafront, my affiliated company, for making me one of the representatives. I enjoyed and learned something that is crucial for my growth as a modern seafarer. These key learnings will serve as the groundwork to build a [sturdier] financial foundation to sustain life and retirement in the future.
I believe that ISWAN’s involvement in the maritime industry is critical in developing more effective seafarers in the future.
