Our featured ISWAN member for July is The Shipowners' Club.
At its heart, ISWAN is a membership organisation and we are proud to have a network of over 100 members who are committed to improving the lives of seafarers worldwide.
Our members reflect the diversity present in the shipping industry today, from shipping companies to unions and insurance groups to welfare organisations, and bring a wealth of experience.
Our Member of the Month this July is The Shipowners’ Club.
WHO are you?
The Shipowners’ Club is a mutual association, run for the benefit of its Members. We provide comprehensive and relevant insurance solutions and services which helps to keep our Members operating, wherever they are in the world, and which meet the exacting demands of our ever-expanding Membership.
WHAT do you do and why is seafarers’ welfare important to you?
Seafarers’ health and wellbeing is a key priority for the Club not only from a business viewpoint, (as a significant number of crew illness related claims continue to be reported), but also from a Corporate Responsibility (CR) perspective. To address these concerns, the Club has developed its own Medical Enhancement Scheme for Seafarers (Medisea), which systematically supports the seafarer with their physical and mental health through an enhanced pre-employment medical examination which is available at no extra cost. This scheme helps seafarers to detect any medical conditions they may have more quickly, thereby allowing them more time to improve their fitness prior to joining the vessel.
Once on board, it is equally important that the Club engages with the industry to provide seafarers with the support they need and that is why we are proud partners of the ISWAN for Seafarers app, which provides guidance and a link to the 24hrs crew helplines.
WHY are you a member of ISWAN?
As part of the Club’s CR strategy, it is important that we develop collaborative relationships with likeminded partners and this is why we have been working with ISWAN for many years. Our most recent collaboration is a report on The impact of maritime decarbonisation on wellbeing: Findings of an ISWAN survey of seafarers and shore-based staff, published in June, with industry guidance on this subject in the pipeline.
ISWAN, at its core, looks to promote and support the welfare of seafarers all over the world. This is in line with one of the Club’s core values – ‘to drive welfare and safety’.
